Silizium Si:
- deoxidizes the steel; SiO2 (silicon dioxide) is formed which usually combines with other oxides (FeO - iron oxide, MnO manganese oxide,...) to form hard and brittle microstructural constituents called silicates
- increases the strength and hardness
- reduces the elongation at break, the material becomes brittle!
- reduces the weldability of the material
