What effects does the alloying element phosphorus have on material properties?

Phosphor P:

  • improves machinability à good flow properties à free cutting steel
  • reduces weldability à crack formation
  • slightly increases rust resistance
  • leads to segregation (segregation of the melt)
  • steel < 0.06% P; highly stressed steel < 0.035%!
